Here I am writing away at Panera with two 70+ year old ladies sitting next to me. They’ve been gossiping about all of their friends and family for about 2 hours now–getting up once to refresh their coffee!
I just overheard them say “Can you believe Margie is still alive! And she’s still tap dancing!!” Both ladies beaming!
I find this wonderful. I can imagine being this way with my best girlfriends years from now. And I know we’ll be this same way because for the most part, we still talk to each other the way we did 10 or 15 years ago. But, instead of talking about the hottest guy at the party, we’re swapping stories about our cute kids. And in 30 years, we’ll still be talking about our cute kids, but we’ll be boasting about which college they graduated from, what amazing job they landed and what wonderful people they’re about to marry.
We’ll still be gossiping about our friends, trying to figure out who has had to deal with what.
“Bless her heart,” I heard one of these woman say.
Then we’ll discuss our ailments that come with old age and feel secretly happy that we are still alive to share coffee with our friends. And probably share in amazement that Jules or Mandy are still alive (after the life they’ve been living-bless their hearts!)
Friendship – no matter if you’re young or old – is to be held as a most precious gift. Cheers to friends that are forever!!
