Jurassic Park isn’t just a thing of the past, thank you very much. Thanks to two children who love dinosaurs that have made us watch it countless times (for nearly four years), dinosaurs are now an integral part of our lives.
Why dinosaurs you ask? I would ask the same thing. About four and a half years ago, my mom bought my daughter a book from Costco that was about dinosaurs. Surprisingly enough, when presented with the choice of princesses or dinos…she picked the prehistoric lizards. Seriously. And, the excitement never waned. Then, three and a half years later, our son was born. It happened nearly as fast…he was addicted too. And soon our TV was filled with Jurassic Park, The Land Before Time and Disney’s The Dinosaur. We were all hooked. I caught (and still) catch myself wishing they’d make another Jurassic Park just to save us from the every day monotony. Of course, that may not happen…so instead, I scan the movie shelves for something, anything to get us by…anything promising a hint of dinosaurs. You’d be surprised how hard it is to find, or at least movies that are appropriate for kids my age are. Not that Jurassic Park is…but you get the point.
I like to entertain the thought that someday my kids will be doing something exciting like traveling all over the world as paleontologists or scientists in search of the next big dinosaur find. I imagine that this isn’t just a child phase and it’s a true interest that will ensure success in their precious futures.
Either way, I’ll take it. I love seeing them get excited about something, and let’s face it-dinosaurs are much more exciting than princesses or Barbies or Tonka Trucks.
